Rockhound Related:
There is a desire by the Goldendale Events committee to get more folks to attend events that are scheduled in our area. Currently, there are a number of activities during the Spring through Fall months. The latest suggestion from that arena is a request to have a Rockhound Pow-Wow type event with dealers and field trips. Several Rockhound organizations have been contacted in discussions on this topic. One of these organizations will be discussing the possibilities of taking this project on at their board meeting in June.

Knapping Related:
I am getting more inquiries from new Knappers as to who to contact in their area for learning more about Flint-Knapping. I have been sending them contact information as to Knappers within a 80 mile radius of their residence.

Thomas Hollow/Goldendale K/I for May of 2007 was cancelled until Loretta and I are in a better situation to host the event. We passed along the word to all of our Knapper friends, via email and the “SPALLS” newsletter, published by Rich and Joan Urata. richurata@cybernet1.com We received a lot of responses to this and may put something together in the coming fall for several days, a mini-K/I. More info later.

Tidbits:
Loretta and I are healing up pretty well from our knee surgeries now. She is taking her daily walks with the “guard-cat” and doing pretty well. I am now able to ride my quad and even shift it too! I am also able to get work done with my loader/backhoe as well. We just finished up with building a new pistol range with distances of 25 and 50 yards (measured).

My friend from town, Bob (retired CA Hwy Patrol) has been coming out on Tuesdays and Thursdays to practice shooting. He will be competing in a 2700 pistol match near Moxee City, WA, in June. Not me though, I have trouble staying on the paper at 25 yards anymore with my Essex framed .45 acp. Seems things just don’t work as well when we get older. The brain is there but the old body has it’s issues ~~

Mining - Prospecting Stuff:
Operations at the China Hollow Mine is sporadic, at best. There may be about 2 weeks total of work done this year/season. I will get about 1500 lbs of fresh material hauled here before the Biggs Rapids Bridge is closed, which is scheduled for early 2008.
I have been able to locate more of the red common Opal at the China Hollow property. It has very nice color to it but it is not very plentiful, yet.

We’ve been able to locate another location for some interesting Goodnoe Hills common Opal. This material seems to be more dense than the China Hollow common Opal and it knaps well. Jim Miller seems to like it fine, as well as Jim Hopper! This location is a fairly new one, has seasonal access (2 months) and is also a fee dig. It is not the same as the old Goodnoe Hills material, yet, but similar.

Getting access to private lands here is almost impossible, too many abuses in the past!
